After a quick Beach day with the wife and kids down in Ventura we looked up sushi and were fortunate enough to pull up to Kibo for their happy hour menu.
Both the sushi and their dishes were simply amazing. So well prepared, with a great eye for presentation, and delightfully enough everything was served looking just as it did on the menu. The service by the wait staff and the top-notch chefs alike was fantastic.
Coming from the Bay Area and having traveled a lot, my wife and I have keen palettes for Japanese cuisine. Kibo was worth the 300 + mile drive, and it may seem crazy but I'm relatively certain we'll be doing it again. If you're ever in the area, this gem is a must visit.

This used to be a place we liked to go occasionally. It's never been great, just ok enough. However. Yesterday, we had our last meal there. The spicy tuna was not fresh and the roll we had was doused in sauce to cover the taste. Both of our cooked chicken dishes, spicy garlic and teriyaki, tasted like they were microwaved. They were rubbery and just warm enough. The garlic chicken sauce was actually a tomato-based bbq sauce for some reason and it was awful.
The spring roll had bad salad in it. The salad itself was withered and tasted old.
And just when you think it couldn't be worse... they messed up the rice. It tasted like styrofoam and it was definitely dry and microwaved.
The sushi (not the roll) we're fine. And the vegetable tempura was ok, too.
To top it all off, the bill was $70. Absolutely not worth it for a Happy Hour menú and most definitely not worth it ever again.
No wonder why no one was at the restaurant last night. We thought we beat the rush. Nope. They are just a bad restaurant. -

Decided to come in for some sushi and it happened to be Happy Hour so we were pretty stoked when they handed us the happy hour menu but not the full menu.
I wouldn't say there was a difference in price when it came to the happy hour menu because our rolls were still around $11. From what I could tell there wasn't special pricing but I also never saw the regular binded menu they had up at the desk for other items.
Regardless, the sushi roll I got was amazing and our service was great. I did like that they had Macaron ice cream sandwiches for dessert in a case because I've been obsessed with those things lately. -

When my cousin called and said she was coming into town and would like to get together, she had one request, and that was it had to be Sushi because that's all her 7 year old son will eat.
I was looking for a restaurant close to home and also low key enough that we could enjoy our conversation.
Kibo's interior is dark, furnished with tables and chair, as well as the remaining booths from the predecessor, it gives you a sense of mysteriousness.
Our waiter was lovely and very patient with my cousins son who is a bit hyper active and a very serious sushi eater so he was not happy when he did not see a rainbow roll on the menu, but the waiter persevered and told him they could easily make him what he so desired.
The rolls were good, we got two of the rainbow rolls because the boy was not going to share, also a sunshine roll, a Philadelphia roll, and a salmon roll for my cousins daughter. I also ordered a side of the Yakisoba noodles with chicken, so everyone could have some.
Let me put it this way, we had food to take home, but we enjoyed every bit of our meal, My cousins son ate his entire 8 rolls and started digging into the second batch of rainbow we'd ordered until she stopped him.
While it's not the fanciest sushi house, and I'd like it to be a little brighter inside, I wouldn't say no to going back.
Thanks again the waitstaff, you did a great job that day!
